Academic and Social-Economic Growth
Great Minds of New Mexico owner Dr. Gutow is a Licensed Psychologist and a Licensed School Psychologist with a broad background in teaching and providing assessment, therapy and consultation services.
The results of these assessments can provide insights into how students understand the world so that parents and educators can better support the child’s academic and social-emotional growth.
“…there are a lot of things in this world you don’t understand.
Discovering those things is one of life’s joys.”

The Idea
The client originally wanted “the New Mexico Zia logo coming out of a brain.” She knew what she wanted right off the bat but didn’t know how to fully execute it.
I thought it was a great idea and it took a lot of experimenting to get it right.
The Sketches
At first I started with brainstorming and sketches of actual brains. My final sketches played on the idea of learning and growth. These included (ugly) busy sketches of a top view and (much better) simple drawings using circles and straight lines.
LEARNING. BEHAVIOR. GROWTH.
The Final Logo
We landed a play using the New Mexico Zia. The Zia Indians of New Mexico regard the sun as a sacred symbol. We incorporated part of it to both as a sunset and the top half of the head.
The subtle lines on the sides of the head help reflect a sunset while the eyes and hairline help make up the face.
Creating an Online Presence with a small Budget
The Website
I usually build custom theme’s on top of the Genesis Framework catered towards the clients’ needs. Sometimes, though, you have to fit into the client’s budget by using a prebuilt theme. The folks over at StudioPress have a theme called Digital Pro that was a perfect setup for what we wanted to do to the Great Minds of New Mexico website.
Digital Pro features a friendly, open feel with clean, easy-to-read typography. One of the nice things about this theme is it’s call to actions and ability to remove some elements without messing up the look. For instance, we removed the News section as the client will not be writing blog posts.
