As a website designer and developer, I always appreciate the increasing number of beautifully designed websites and their captivating functionality. As the industry continues to evolve, web design trends only become more outstanding. 2015 will be another amazing year as design trends continue to develop and browsers become more advanced. This is part one of two.
For example, one trendy design element being used by website designers is that of going huge. Images that are large, stunning, and high definition are the rule of the day as 2015 rolls along. Displays are more powerful and people want to see the fine details. Larger and better quality images feed the human desire for visual stimulation.
Nothing accomplishes this better than giant digital images that are often used as a background for sweeping portions of a site. Equally important in terms of cutting edge design for the web this year is dynamic and engaging content. The idea that content on the web is king is more relevant today than ever before.

What is perhaps most important of all when discussing web content is that which is in the form of a story. When storytelling becomes part of a website’s landscape, the readership can be expected in increase substantially. In short, drab and boring written content simply will not do. Web content must be opinionated and should tell a great story or give the reader something useful to leave with in order to keep visitors and readers coming back for more.
Another key trend is longer and more in-depth content. A short and sassy blog post is fun, but to gain true traction online requires long-form style content that reaches into the 1,000s of words. This is where the rubber meets the road. Quality content of this flavor is the new standard. This is quickly becoming evident with the current web design trends going forward. A rich and genuine content experience combined with eye-catching images is the basis of a good website.
Add A Level of Physical Reality To A Digital Presence
Taking it a step further, typography is still a large underpinning of great website design and development. Professional designers are taking font use to an entirely new level. Custom fonts and unique typography intended to capture the imagination are taking the newest website creations to new heights. Incorporating artistic fonts and blending them with vector graphics and carefully coded CSS can result in a website that is truly special and memorable.
Another trend that is capturing the imagination of more and more designers is hand drawn illustrations. These illustrations are painstakingly hand-drawn either digitally or with pencil and paper, scanned, and recreated digitally.
Many larger and well-known sites such as Diesel are now also integrating background video into their websites as a backdrop. This is a growing trend in 2015 that will only become more popular as broadband speeds and browser compatibility increase.
Minimal in Design
Minimalism is still a thing. It’s a trend that isn’t going away any time soon. It’s clean, it’s simple, and call-to-actions are easy to implement. They work better because it’s easier to draw attention to them. One of my new favorite weekly blogs called No Sidebar does a great job of that.
Trendy Websites That Look Great on Every Size Device
These are just a few of the more prominent design trends in 2015. It is becoming a standard to have a fully responsive, mobile friendly website no matter how trendy your design may be. It’s so important that your website is coded correctly to accommodate different sized devices that Google changed their algorithm to show more mobile friendly websites in their search results pages.
